A Diabetic Food Guide

Being a diabetic does not mean you cannot eat certain foods. It is important to increase your intake of certain foods and limit others. You should limit sugar and fat intake, eating fiber-rich foods, starches, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, milk and dairy products. You do not have to buy special foods. Eating normal foods in the right balance is the key to a healthy diabetic diet.

Eat Regular Meals

It is important for diabetics not to skip meals. Eating regularly ensures your blood-sugar level does not swing from one extreme to the other. Eating several small meals a day is a good way to keep your sugar level steady.

Sugar Intake

While it is important to regulate your sugar intake, you do not have to give up sweet foods completely. Moderate amounts of sweet foods will do no harm as long as your diet is otherwise healthy and low in sugar. Diabetics should stay away from sugary drinks because they can cause blood-sugar levels to rise quickly.

Diet Planning

Plan your meals carefully, watching serving sizes. It is important to keep your intake of carbohydrates and calories at about the same amount every day. This helps with weight control and maintaining your blood-sugar level. Check with your physician for specific diet plans for your type of diabetes. The Mayo Clinic offers a diabetic meal guide (see Resources), and the American Diabetes Association lists a Diabetes Food Pyramid (see Resources).

Tips for Cutting Fat From Your Diet

Fat does not directly affect blood-sugar levels. However, fat intake does affect cardiovascular disease and obesity, conditions commonly associated with diabetes. Here are some helpful tips for cutting fat from your diet:

Use more vegetables in casseroles, opposed to meats.

Do not fry foods.

Use fat-free dressings on salads.

Drink skim milk or low-fat milk.

Use yogurt as a topping instead of whipped cream.

Use low-fat margarine instead of butter.

Substitute cheese with low-fat varieties.

Trim fat from meats before cooking, and remove the skin from chicken.

If You Are Pregnant and Diabetic

Pregnancy is known to cause gestational diabetes in some women. Expectant diabetic mothers and mothers who breast-feed need the same nutrition as women who do not have diabetes. Your doctor can give you a diet guide for pregnancy. Take all of the recommended vitamins, particularly folic acid and iron. Eat regular meals, and keep healthy snacks nearby to avoid a low blood-sugar level.
