Save Money On Car Repairs: Buy Used Car Parts

Performance PartsHave you ever taken your car to the mechanic to have a part replaced, and while you thought the part would cost significantly less than marked up to be, you end up paying up to four times more? Pretty much everyone has been in this situation at some time or another.

An ironically large part of the cost is what the mechanic charges for the new part(s). The problem is, new parts cost a fair deal of money, and most of us are not really able to afford a brand new alternator these days. But what other option do you have? You need your car, and your car needs that part.

Fortunately, you have other options to purchasing an entirely new part. I'm writing this article to outline the alternative of buying used car parts. Let's look at this in detail.

The words "Used Car Parts" is not one that brings happy thoughts to mind. There was clearly an obvious reason the previous owner needed to get rid of it, so even if it is refurbished, you're probably paying for something that might run for six months. Maybe.

However, at the same time, a 'used car part' can belong to a car that was driven just once. Of course, this is rarely the case, but still entirely possible. If you think about it, every car that has been driven is essentially using used car parts. There are hundreds of thousands of cars that run perfectly on used car parts, so why shouldn't yours?

The internet has helped tremendously -- before the only used car parts were those that people wanted to get rid of for various reasons; and usually good ones. However, now people need to get rid of car parts for financial crunches, especially in the brewing economy, and many of these parts are being abandoned at astoundingly low prices.

Another major benefit to the world of used parts is that of modern junk yards. Junk yards died off and were replaced with auto recycling plants in the late 90's. These people are all over the place. they buy cars that are no longer functional (i.e, broken) and scrap them. That doesn't mean they were old or 'burned out' necessarily. A lot of these cars were involved in car accidents, leaving a majority of the parts in nearly perfect condition. Most auto recycling plants have little to no interest in auditing each individual nut and bolt that comes in, so the gems are tossed out with the coal. You can pick up some tremendous deals here.

Many auto recyclers will refurbish parts on site and resell them. Oftentimes these parts will have the recycler's warranty, and if they fail, you can go back to the recycler and ask for a new part at no cost. This savings goes a long way toward helping with that staggering repair bill. Not to mention how much better for the planet this option is. This will save you huge amounts of money in the long run, as you're getting a product guaranteed to work or your money back for a third of the price.

To summarize this article, when you take your car in for repairs, tell your mechanic that you're using used parts. You wallet will thank you for it in the long run.
