How to Activate a Used Cell Phone to Use with Your Existing Cell Service

Prior Aphter, Yahoo Contributor Network

Whether you're an avid EBay buyer, or you just inherited a cool cell phone from one of your friends, you need to learn how to activate a Used Cell Phone. While some phones are extremely simple to activate, others are slightly more difficult. Since cell phones are rising in cost, more and more people are turning to used cell phones to replace their existing models. Activating a Used Cell Phone can be done in several steps, which I have outlined below.

the first step you will need to take in activating a Used Cell Phone is contacting your wireless service provider. You will want to ask them if you can activate the cell phone that you now have. While many cell phone providers will allow you to activate a previously used phone, others have strict rules against this. Thus, it is important that you contact your service provider immediately after receiving the phone.

The next step in activating a used cell phone is to give the service provider the phone's ESN, or Electronic Serial Number. This number will let the provider know if their service is compatible with the phone. You can find the ESN by removing the cell phone's battery and on the underside of the battery is an 11-digit number (sometimes this amount of numbers can vary).

Once you have the okay to use the used phone from your service provider, you will want to take the SIM card from your previous phone and put it inside of this new phone. The SIM card has all of your account information, and is linked to your service provider. If you do not have a SIM card, than you will need to contact your service provider and request a new card. Once you have done this they will tell you the steps you will need to take to complete the activation process.

Remember that many cell phones only work with certain providers. While there are some models that are multi-provider, most phones do not allow you to switch service companies. You can find out what service provider the used cell phone goes with by looking on the face plate or where the SIM card slot is. Most SIM cards are not the same size (such as a T-Mobile SIM and a Cingular SIM), so if your card does not fit the phone than it is not compatible for use. Also, don't visit a cell phone store personally to activate a new cell phone. The sales staff in these stores have normally not been trained to activate phones, so they will end up calling the same number you would at home.
