Avoiding Gout Flare Ups
gout is one of the most painful conditions known to man. Anything touching the affected area is excruciatingly painful, including over-the-counter topical pain remedies. While repeat episodes are likely, there are things you can do to keep them to a minimum.
gout is caused by crystals of uric acid deposited in joints. The uric acid buildup can be caused by a variety of things. Those who eat a high amount of protein, especially processed and organ meats, are likely candidates. Those with kidney disease are also at risk.
The problem is purine. It is a natural part of protein, both plant and animal. The waste product after the breakdown of purine is uric acid. Normally, the acid is filtered out by the kidneys. If that doesn't happen, it recirculates.
Over time, the acid forms crystals. The crystals get heavy, and eventually can't be moved by the blood stream. While any joint is at risk, the right big toe is the most common for a first time attack.
What can I do?
The first bit is obvious; avoid purine. There are many websites that have a list of protein sources and how much purine they each contain. While you do need protein, choosing sources that have less of the problem constituent is a good idea.
Drinking cherry juice and eating either cherries or strawberries can also help. Linnaeus mentioned that his wife suggested the latter. The "father of botany" was skeptical, but those in pain often snatch at a way to get rid of it. He wrote that it actually worked for him.
Make sure you stay hydrated. Lack of fluid intake is hard on the kidneys and can increase the concentration of uric acid in the blood stream.
What should I Avoid other than Purine?
Aspirin is a problem for those with gout, as it can increase the amount of uric acid in the blood stream. If you are on aspirin therapy, however, do not stop it unless your doctor approves it.
Beer is another bad idea. This is for two reasons. First, all alcoholic beverages cause dehydration. Second, it contains yeast, which is a protein source.
While coffee and tea are often safe for hydration purposes, it might be wise to limit them. Caffeine is a mild diuretic, which could cause dehydration. This includes tea capsules, which contain a significantly higher amount of caffeine.
Gout is an unpleasant condition, but with care it can be avoided. Make sure to talk to your doctor before implementing any new treatment for it or any other medical condition. We are all different and only your doctor can tell you what is safe for you to use.

Can the heavy metal Lead (Pb) dissolve differentially in water (ie flowing stream) vs ice (ie frozen stream)?
We are testing for heavy metals in connection with a public health study (on acute gout). In one study region we found very low levels of lead (Pb) throughout most of the year, but when the streams are starting to freeze in October-November we found:
(1) no Pb in the ice, but
(2) high levels of Pb in the underlying trickle of water.
Is this perhaps because some mineralized lead is now highly concentrated in the small amount of water; versus diluted in the larger volumes of water in summer; versus no lead being taken up in the ice??
Thanks for help on this...

I need someone with medical understanding.?
I am a 35 year old male. 6?1 320 lb? Married and a father of two children? I am sick almost all the time. Into my mid 20s I was an athlete. When I had an injury that the doctors called a soft tissue injury of the ankle? They treated this by throwing pain killers at me for 7 years until I saw a specialist who told me it was in fact acute gout. I was told additionally I have a genetic condition called hyperlipidima my body naturally makes to many lipids. I was told they were over 10,000. Needless to say they were amazed I was alive. I have normal to low blood pressure. My cholesterol was 280?and is now 200. last time I had it checked. I have an uncler where my esophagus meets my stomach. They gave me a generic form of nexium to fix it. And it did from what I can tell.
I have this wonderful pain in my abdomen like all my organs get swollen and I also at that time double over in pain from cramps, as well as excessive gas and belching some kind of sulfur smelling something? It makes me vomit and have diarrhea to the point I lay on the bathroom floor and just hope if I was to fall asleep I would not wake up. I am tired, angry, cranky, depressed, and at a total loss. I talk to the doctor who tells me to losse weight. So, I try and well when I move it feels like 10000000 pins are slamming through my ankle so exercise is not easy. I can?t swim because I live in a cold weather region. I break bikes?flat out. I have lost 30 lb by diet modification. I cut out sugar and soda. I eat more veggies and less fats and red meat. Mostly because if I don?t I get a massive wave of pain from eating that stuff. I don?t sleep well? I have trouble breathing?.I can?t stand for more then 2o min at a time?and if I do I can?t move for 3 days unless u take 800 mg anti-inflammation drugs. I have uric acid deposits in my feet. I take alloperinol for that when I can afford it. I can?t do this anymore. This needs to get fixed or I am a dead man. Oh and I have kidney stones?too?weee.
