Lopurin: FDA Approved Medication In The Treatment Of Gout

Treatment Of GoutIn the United States, millions of adults suffer from complications associated with gout. For some, the management of symptoms comes in the form of diet and exercise, coupled with alternative medicine and alternative healing. For other gout patients, the use of prescription medications is vital to maintaining mobility and some degree of independence.

As a drug that has been made available for many decades , the FDA approved prescription medication, Lopurin, also known as allopurinol, is continuing to provide a great therapeutic benefit in the treatment of gout. Lending its success to the ability to take naturally produced purines, found in the body, and change the way the body metabolizes purines, ultimately leading to a change in the formation of uric acid, the underlying cause of gout.

Dosing of Lopurin, in the treatment of gout, is provided in 100 milligram capsules, and administered in ranges from 200 to 300 milligrams for mild gout sufferers, 400 to 600 milligrams for moderate to severe cases. Dosing of Lopurin can be a strategic process as doses in excess of 300 milligrams per day will need to be divided into two or three sessions while doses less than 300 milligrams can be administered once per day.

As with most FDA approved drugs, the use of Lopurin, in the treatment of gout, does not come without side effects. As a general rule, most side effects will dissipate as treatment continues but may include a sudden onset of acute gout and symptoms associated with it. In most cases, the side effects associated with acute gout will dissipate, ultimately allowing Lopurin to provide long term relief. If symptoms seem excessive while using Lopurin, resulting in rash, headache, fever, dizziness or gastrointestinal complications, it may be necessary to seek out the medical attention of a healthcare professional.

Contraindications while using Lopurin, in the Treatment Of Gout are limited. As a general rule, if you suffer from liver complications, complications of the bowel or intestines, or experience kidney complications, your dosing will need to be closely monitored. Additionally, in those individuals who suffer from bone marrow complications, complications with cardiovascular and vision health, Lopurin may also not be indicated. For women who are pregnant, or may become pregnant, it is not clear what effect Lopurin may have on a developing fetus so use of the drug should be limited.

As with any complications associated with gout, the key to the management of your mobility and continued independent will lie in the early intervention, diagnosis and treatment. For individuals who suffer from complications associated with gout, both acute and chronic, the use Lopurin has shown to be effective at regulating uric acid levels when used appropriately. When considering treatment options, discuss the use of Lopurin with your health care professional as it may provide the long term relief you need to ensure your continued independence.
