How To Search For A Grant

Searching for a grant takes time and research. Grants can be found through government databases, nonprofit foundations' websites, grant funding reference books, and even word-of-mouth. the key to finding the right grant is not necessarily where you look but how you look. With all the grant resources available, if you do not know how to search for a grant, the process can be extremely difficult and time-consuming.

Step 1

Search for grants by type of project that needs funding. Most foundations and agencies that give grants give mainly to a specific causes or purpose. Avoid narrowing down the search too much at this point. For example, if you are trying to find funding for an arts museum, you may look for art grants as well as grants for tourists attractions and youth programs. Internet based data

Step 2

Define the beneficiary of the grant project. Try to focus on the outcome of the project. Many grants are given to help specific groups of people, communities, areas or ideas.

Step 3

Determine how much funding is needed. How much funding needed will greatly determine where you spend time looking for grant money. The larger amount of grant money needed, the longer and more difficult it will be to find. Some grant seekers find it easier to break big projects up into smaller projects and work to find grant funding for the individual project pieces.

Step 4

Choose a type of funding. Grant funding can be obtained through government funds, private foundations or donors. When applying for multiple grants, you do not have to pick just one type of grant funding, but if choosing more than one, they do need to be compatible. When accepting grant money from some organization, you may become ineligible for obtaining grants through some other organization. For example, some private foundations do not award grant funding to projects that are partially funded through a government agency.

Step 5

Prioritize grant applications. Do not overload yourself by applying for multiple grants at once. It is best to limit yourself to applying for grants that you are most qualified for, instead of applying for too many grants and skimping on the application process. Tips

  • Look for a match between your project and mission statement when searching for possible grant funding sources to avoid wasting time on dead leads.
  • Unless otherwise stated in grant guidelines, always contact the funding agency before starting to write a grant proposal.
Warnings
  • Watch out for scams, and never pay to apply for a grant.
