Never underestimate the advantages of niche marketing when trying to build a presence online.

When building a website, most people are concerned with attracting as many visitors as possible. This only makes sense. However, there's a huge difference between attracting visitors you can turn into sales and those who are merely popping in for a half-hearted "look" before they click away to another site.

For example, if you're building a website about coaching football, you'll be better off starting out trying to rank in the search engines for the term "football coaching tips" than "coaching football". More people search for "coaching football", but there's less competition for "football coaching tips". You can focus your efforts even further by creating content for "youth football coaching tips".

As you build more pages for your site, you'll begin to see your traffic numbers steadily increase as you rank highly in the search engines for the smaller, niche keywords. Over time, however, as the search engines recognize your site as an "authority" in your niche, you'll begin to find that you also rise up in the rankings for the broader keywords.

Another of the many advantages of niche marketing is that you attract the people most likely to be interested in buying that which you sell on your website. More doesn't always mean better online. You can actually make more money attracting 4, 000 excited people every month who passionately want your information than you might by attracting 10, 000 visitors who are simply "checking you out".

You want to make sure that your visitor is the "right" visitor. If you're selling an e-book on how to become the best possible youth football coach, you're not going to make many sales if you're attracting visitors hoping for a tutorial on how to land a coaching job in the pros.

The most vital of all the advantages of niche marketing online is that you will eventually create a community of like-minded people. As the Internet ages, it's becoming clear how important it is to create a community among your visitors. Through a quality blog or forum, a tightly niched website will attract people who share your passion. A substantial percentage of these visitors will naturally want to share their own knowledge with you and your other visitors. Over time, through their own comments, these people will get to know one another, will create content for you, and will influence others to buy from you.

By building a website that is focused on a small niche, you begin to establish an "authority" presence in the eyes of your visitors. Your "authority" and the "community" you create will allow you to benefit from all the advantages of niche marketing, such as free, targeted traffic in the search engines, which results in a growing number of monthly visitors who are rabid fans, which results in long-term success for you online.
