Samsung LED TV vs. LCD

As LCD TVs remain popular and keep getting cheaper, Samsung has offered LED TVs at a higher price than standard LCD. LED basically uses similar technology as LCD but features important differences that improve contrast.

  1. LCD

    • Liquid Crystal Display technology utilizes fluorescent tubes in the back of the television to light the screen. This backlighting makes for a very bright picture but lacks the contrast of its longtime competitor plasma.

    LED

    • LED TVs are not exactly new and separate technology from LCDs. LED televisions are a variation on the basic LCD. The main difference is that instead of using a constant light source in the back of the television, the LEDs can illuminate parts of the screen more selectively, which allows for deeper blacks and better contrast.

    Which is Better?

    • The Samsung LED is essentially a step between LCD and plasma. The LEDs make up for the loss of contrast found in LCDs and use much less energy than a plasma TV. The price also falls somewhere between the two. As of 2010, a 55-inch Samsung LED is $200 more than its LCD counterpart, which is still significantly less than a plasma. In the end, the technology is similar, but the LED is a definite step up.
