How To Tell If Your Chihuahua Is In Heat

If you own a female Chihuahua, knowing when she is in heat is vital; Either to prevent an unwanted pregnancy, or to help you know when to breed her. Spotting the signs of heat can be difficult, especially if you have no other dogs, and are unfamiliar with a dogs heat cycle. Here is a quick guide to the stages of heat:Week 1The first week of heat is probably the easiest to spot. At this stage, your dog is not ready to breed, but will exhibit the most obvious signs of being in heat. These signs can include:

  • Bloody discharge. Not pretty, I know, but dogs aren't that different from humans in this area. Some females may be more obvious than others, and leave spotting on the ground, however using a tissue to wipe her Vulva with will let you know whether she is having bloody discharge.
  • Swelling: Looking at your dogs Vulva can tell you if they are in heat. The Vulva can swell considerably larger than normal at this point.
  • Males: As well as her own physical reactions, heat can be spotted by the behaviour of other dogs. If she is in heat, other dogs will begin hanging around. However, it is best to keep her away from other dogs, because even though she will not be ready to breed with them, the unwanted attention can be very distressing for her.
Week 2-3At this point, your Chihuahua should start to be ready to breed. There are a couple of ways you could tell that she is ready, for instance:
  • Color change in Discharge: The color of your dogs discharge should start to lighten, often it will go from a bloody color to a more murky, clear substance.
  • Your Chihuahua will also show signs of being interested: She will do so by moving her tail to the side, to show she is ready. One slightly disturbing tip I got from a breeder once is to tickle her Vulva to see if she responds in such a way.
Once you have determined that your Chihuahua is ready to breed, you can begin choosing a suitable male for her. It's important to try and find a male who is up to date on shots and suits the size of your Chihuahua. Most stud owners will let you take her a couple of times for no extra payment, to give her as much chance of becoming pregnant as possible. After this stage, your Chihuahua will no longer be fertile. However, she will probably still attract attention from other dogs, so I would keep her inside a while longer. Happy breeding!By Briony Jarvis -
