(Video) Steven Slater's Great Jet Blue Escape -- The Video

Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater has been a media darling since he told off a passenger, grabbed a couple of beers, and slid down the emergency exit chute into what many believe will be a long unemployment line. Regardless of his employment status (he still has not been fired from Jet Blue), many have wondered why there have been no videos of the incident. At the very least, didn't someone have on some type of recording device when he went ballistic over the public address system? and although it appears that nothing concerning the alleged confrontations or Steven Slater's expletive-riddled rebuttal to a rude customer were captured for posterity, it does appear that at least WNBC in New York was able to obtain his daring exit, which was captured on video.

Although the video, which is 40 seconds long, doesn't show much (an obscuring pole makes certain of that), the viewer is able to make out the emergency exit chute deploying. A few seconds later, probably after Steven Slater was able to ascertain that the chute is stable, a dark figure is seen to slide between the exterior of the plane and the scene-occluding pole.

It isn't as dramatic as it could have been. It is uncertain what Steven Slater did after he made it to the bottom of the chute, although it would have been a nice touch if he had raised one of the beers (Blue Moon, TMZ reported) and took a big satisfying pull off the other as he stepped away from his exit ramp.

In this age of video, it isn't much, but it might be enough to get Steven Slater seven years in prison. Shortly after the incident, Steven Slater was arrested by New York City Police. He was charged with 2nd- and 4th-degree criminal mischief, 1st- and 2nd-degree reckless endangerment, and criminal trespass in the 3rd degree.

The incident reportedly began over a confrontation with a Jet Blue passenger who had attempted to retrieve overhead baggage before the Jet Blue flight came to a complete stop, a regulation infraction with which Slater reportedly apprised the passenger. He supposedly went to close the overhead compartment while the passenger was still trying to get the baggage and was subsequently hit in the head. He asked for an apology and the passenger refused, allegedly cursing him. That was the apparently the last straw for Slater.

Slater made his way to a PA microphone and said, "To the passenger who called me a 'm***** f*****, ' f*** you! I've been in the business 28 years. That's it. I'm done."

He took two Blue Moon beers from the plane's galley, engaged the emergency exit chute release, then jumped.

The 28-year flight attendant veteran's story has reached folkloric proportions. Jimmy Fallon from NBC's "Late Night" even wrote "The Jet Blue Song" in his honor, raising a vocal toast to Steven Slater's flamboyant exit, which has become a working class ideal.

But it may not have happened the way it has been reported. Port Authority officials have found it difficult to locate the passenger that may have caused it all. Some believe Steven Slater may have made up the altercation to justify his escape plans.

Either way, the video is proof that someone exited the plane. And even if Steven Slater completely fabricated the cursing of the passenger, it's still one of the best "take this job and shove it" stories ever.
