Is Jet Blue's " All You Can Jet" Promotion Really Worth It?

Twitter is buzzing, where @jetblue has more than 1 million followers, over the lastest $ 499-699 pass around the country. Anywhere you want to go for a month. Here's the link to my first article describing it in detail.

I checked with some other experts to see what they think. Is this a deal? According to Scott Baldwin from the Middle Seat, (Wall Street Journal'sblog) and Jet Blue's Ryan Baldwin,

"We're looking to tell people to get past the post-summer bl ues and take advantage of a great deal." The more time you have to travel, the more bang you'll get for your buck, said Baldwin, adding: "If you were to take two transcontinental flights, it'll likely be worth your money."

Passes are on sale until August 21 or while supplies last. While there isn't a set number of passes, JetBlue will be monitoring sales to "protect the company, " Baldwin said.

Scott Baldwin adds:

Using the pass does require some advance planning. Customers must book flights at least three days before departure, and they need to make changes at least three days before the flight to avoid fees. You can't change your mind at the last minute without penalty either. A look at the fine print reveals your pass is suspended until you pay a $100 "no-show" fee.

so is the pass worth it? Baldwin says his sister publication SmartMoney looked at whether it's truly a deal for travelers.

Say you're tempted to buy an "All You Can Jet" pass to book a getaway to the Dominican Republic. Round-trip flights from Washington, D.C., to Santo Domingo could cost you around $445 with tax if you booked a weeklong trip now. Using the pass, you could also take a weekend trip to Houston that might otherwise cost about $348 on JetBlue. You'd still pay taxes on the international flight - so you'd spend about $746 on travel that would have cost you $793. Depending on where you're flying from, you might need to take three trips within that month to really make the pass an attractive bargain.

SmartMoney also notes it might make sense for businesses with tighter travel budgets to take advantage of the deal.

So it depends on where you want to go, and how long you have to use the pass. If you have the whole month free---- and you are not picky about your destinations, it could be fun. But if you are specific and a have very narrow window to places, maybe not.

Baldwin also mentioned that Air Canda offers a similar pass called the North American Unlinited Pass which might be worth investigating as well.

Overall, it seems like a buy.
